• Juice Fasting – Spring Rejuvenation

    Nothing beats a fresh juice fast for purifying and rejuvenating the body, mind and spirit.  I began annual Spring cleanses back in the late 70’s to give my body a rest from the assaults of modern day life.  They were my way of taking a step back and recalibrate my digestive system, a system that was often challenged by my underlying and undiscovered food allergies.

    I’ve continued the practice throughout the years and I am so happy that I have.  Since the 70’s a plethora of books have been written and published on the topic but I keep coming back to a little paperback that I bought for $3.95, How to Keep Slim, Healthy & Young with Juice fasting (sadly it’s out of print).  So today I’m happy to report that I am on day 9 of my juice fast, Paavo Airola style and feeling great!   I’m going to keep going for one more day, in total 10 days and then begin breaking my fast which is a four day gradual process.  I’ve been juicing daily at work and using my little juicer that I bought in 1979, best darn juicer I’ve ever owned!  

    Back in the day when I was a flight attendant, I used to take my Harvest Gold juicer with me all over the world and juice in my hotel room!  Before refrigerators were placed in hotel rooms, I’d pack a plastic garbage bag in my luggage and load it up with fruit and veggies from the local open market / farmers market.  I’d then take the bag, place it in my sink, cover it with ice to keep it cool, juice, and fast to my heart’s content.  Here’s a photo of my mighty little machine, twenty-twenty hindsight, I wish I had bought more than one!

    Juice fasting works for me but check-in first with your physician or other health-care provider before embarking on any type of fast or cleanse.

I make this juice almost every morning. Very quick easy:1 lbs large carrots (washed peeled)1/2 lemon (peeled)few green leafs such as red lettuce or carrot greens1 applePut all ingredients in your juicer. (A centrifuge juicer is easiest for carrots.) Mix. Drink immediately. I peel the carrot for taste (otherwise it tastes too earthy). I find this recipe sweet enough, but if you’re a beginner juicer or have a sweet tooth, add an apple for extra sweetness. The health benefits of carrot juice? It provides Vitamin A, B Vitamins, Vitamin E many minerals (including calcium). I really like that idea. It makes the wheat grass a little fancier. in case you don’t like the taste of wheat grass after finishing your juice, you can take a bite of the orange! Wheat grass is so good for you! It has most of the vitamins minerals needed for human health. It is a complete protein with about 30 enzymes. It has up to 70% chlorophyll (which builds the blood). It’s an excellent source of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc. it’s one of the best alkaline foods. Read more about the amazing qualities of wheatgrass.=======================Golden GoddessFresh apples, jicama, beets and carrots will leave you feeling divine. 1 Golden Delicious Apple washed, seeded and quartered4 carrots washed1/2 jicama peeled and cut in slices to fit in juice hopper1/2 red beet washed1 inch fresh ginger root1/2 small lemon peeled Wash all vegetables. If vegetables are not organic be sure to peel. In juicer place apple slices one at a time, carrots one at a time. Add jicama, beet, ginger root and lemon. Juice all ingredients and pour into glass and enjoy.

    A food processor would atclauly work as well as a juicer and there are some very inexpensive, though small, processors out there. Anyway, working w/a blender, for your veggies: beets, cucumber, tomatoes, spinach are my first choices and all will do well in your blender. Avoid celery and any stringy, super tough veggies as they don’t pulp well. For fruits: pineapple, pears, apples, oranges, banana’s, peaches, strawberries, lemons, limes. Peel everything then cut your veggies/fruits throw in the blender, add ice and put some liquid in the blender before you pulp your fruits/veggies, and while you’re learning just blend a bit, stop, move the food around, pulp again. Add liquid if needed. Now you won’t extract as much juice this way, the end result will be thick. Add lots of ice and you’ll have to add either water or some other liquid to have a juice consistency.Enjoy.
